WellStar North Fulton Hospital offers new life-saving procedure

An abnormal heartbeat sent Travis Keith to WellStar North Fulton Hospital’s Emergency Department. And he became the first North Fulton patient to undergo a new life-saving procedure offered there.

“I got sick at work and they brought me to North Fulton. I’m just glad they did because I’ve got the best doctors caring for me,” said Keith.

On September 27, Anand Kenia, M.D., implanted a cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device that goes under the collar bone and monitors the heart continuously to detect and stop abnormal heartbeats (arrhythmias).

When it detects a dangerously fast rhythm disturbance, the ICD delivers electrical pulses and shocks to restore normal heart rhythm, explained Dr. Kenia.

“We are very pleased to offer this procedure to the North Fulton community. Now people can stay right here in our community to have this cutting-edge procedure,” said Jon-Paul Croom, president of North Fulton Hospital.

“We know that transportation can be challenging for some people, especially some of our elderly and disabled patients, so now they don’t have to worry about travelling to have this surgery,” added Dr. Kenia.
This procedure is ideal for patients who have sustained ventricular tachycardia, survived a cardiac arrest or have a weakened heart muscle from heart attack.

North Fulton Hospital offers an array of cardiovascular services, including cardiac catheterizations with PCI, echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms, Cardiac Rehab, cardiac stress testing, outpatient cardiac diagnostics, cardiac CT scan, pacemaker and defibrillator implants, Holter Monitors and electrocardiograms.

“We will start offering electrophysiology procedures soon, as well as other procedures and services to satisfy the needs of our community and provide world-class care,” noted Croom.
