Expands Access to Mammograms
WellStar Imaging in East Cobb is making it easier to get mammogram screenings close to home and work. Think Pink Thursdays makes it easier for women to receive a mammogram screening without an appointment every Thursday from 1-5:30 p.m.
“Getting a breast cancer screening every year is imperative,” said Luann Land, chief technologist of Clerical Imaging at East Cobb Health Park. “I am a breast cancer survivor and I truly believe screenings can make the difference between life and death.”
In the past, industry experts noted that many women would skip an annual mammogram because it was a hassle to schedule and wait for an appointment. Recognizing the importance of detecting and starting treatment early for positive diagnoses, the team at WellStar began the appointment-free program to make mammograms more accessible.
“We have experienced great success with Think Pink Thursdays at East Cobb Health Park,” said Lisa Dahlquist, manager of Medical Imaging. “Patients appreciate the convenience of doing everything in one building, in one day. If they are already at the Health Park for a primary care visit or to pick up a prescription, they can complete a mammogram screening as well.”
The WellStar Foundation was awarded a $33,000 grant by It’s The Journey, Inc., producer of the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. The grant assures that all women have access to care, even if they cannot afford it. Whether patients are uninsured or underinsured, they can receive mammograms at WellStar
