Among cancers, breast cancer is the second largest cause of death in women. The good news is that it’s highly curable in its early stages, with about a 95 percent five-year survival rate. That’s why early detection is so important. While any woman is at risk for breast cancer, common risk factors include:
- Having a mother or sister who has had breast cancer
- Carrying one of two identified genetic mutations known as BRCA1 and BRCA2
- Having a first baby after age 30
- Being overweight
- Not breast feeding
- Consuming more than one alcoholic beverage a day
- Experiencing onset of menstrual cycles before age 13
If you are at high risk for breast cancer, talk to your physician about high-risk screening options.
To reduce your risk of breast cancer:
- Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity five or more days per week. More exercise may yield additional benefits.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Limit alcohol consumption.
- Don’t smoke.
