The Goddess Of Soul
By Fred Mills
Jane Powell, the singer not the actress, is a natural artist who is often referred to as the “Goddess of Soul.” She possesses the depth of experience to draw upon the rich traditions of popular music, blend them with her unique vocal abilities and vibrant personality, and create music to uplift any audience. And besides… singing from the heart and a little wit never go out of style.
Powell will be performing at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center on Feb. 17 as a part of Black History Month celebrations. Originally from Roanoke, VA, Powell has performed throughout the world and even if you have not seen her live you have certainly heard her voice. She has featured in national ad campaigns for McDonald’s and has performed and lent vocal talents to several motion pictures, but it is on stage where her talents are put on full display.
Backed by piano, bass, and drums, Powell quickly captivates any audience with her musical flexibility, open and playful personality, and often spicy and spontaneous sense of humor. She brings a unique touch to classic R&B, jazz standards, reggae grooves, and gospel anthems.
Indeed, the 1300 colleges and universities comprising the National Association for Campus Activities voted Powell Entertainer of the Year, Jazz Artist of the Year, and winner of the Performing Arts/Music award, on multiple occasions, making her the most honored performer in the history of the organization.
Powell has also opened for several big acts, such as Ray Charles and Lou Rawls amongst others. In reference to her opening for Ray Charles, the Washington Post said, “She stole the night from a legend.” Powell’s latest release is called Lady Jane in London, a collection of jazz standards where she is accompanied by Great Britain’s top jazz artists, as well as Hamish Stuart and other musicians who work for Average White Band, Van Morrison, and Incognito. Additionally, in 2007 Powell was a featured performer for Queen Elizabeth II and Governor Kaine of Virginia during the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown Colony.
