Treecycling – January 4

29th Annual “Bring One for the Chipper”

Georgia’s Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program

By Brandy Rixey

Join the tradition, and give a gift to nature this holiday season by recycling your Christmas tree. For 29 years, the “Bring One for the Chipper” program has helped Georgians recycle their Christmas trees. Sponsors like The Home Depot, The Davey Tree Expert Company, Georgia Forestry Commission, One Tree Planted, and WXIA-TV make it possible for the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation to implement the program in hundreds of communities statewide.

Since its inception, the network has recycled over six million Christmas trees, and that number continues to grow each year. Resulting mulch gets donated to playgrounds, government beautification projects, parks, and individual yards. In certain communities, trees are also transformed into fish habitats at local lakes. Trees from metro locations will be chipped into mulch by The Davey Tree Expert Company. Mulch is available free to the public upon request by calling 770-451-7911 or by filling out the form on their website at

This year, Chipper’s official date is January 4. Support the program by bringing your unadorned tree (no flocking or fake snow made from artificial materials) to a designated drop-off site or volunteering with your local affiliate—the program involves the entire community and countless volunteers. Visit for more information.

Need help with the disposal of your tree? For the eighteenth year, Boy Scout Troop 841 will step up to help with the disposal of your Christmas tree in North Fulton and pick up your tree(s) for a donation of $15 per tree. If you would like to make use of this service, please visit and reserve your pick up slot before 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 2.
